Perinatal Counseling

Compassionate Support During Pregnancy, Postpartum, and the Transition to Parenthood

Perinatal Counseling

Pregnancy, childbirth, and becoming a parent can be among life's most meaningful experiences. They can also bring unexpected emotional challenges, changes in relationships, and feelings that are difficult to understand or express.

At Waypoint Psychotherapy, we recognize that the perinatal period is not always the joyful, uncomplicated experience that people are led to expect. Whether you are preparing for a child, adjusting to life after childbirth, or struggling with changes in your emotional well-being, you deserve a place where you can speak openly and receive thoughtful, compassionate support.

When Perinatal Counseling Can Help

Perinatal counseling addresses the psychological and emotional challenges that can arise during pregnancy and after childbirth. These experiences vary widely, and there is no single way that a person is supposed to feel during this period of life.

Some common concerns include:

  • Postpartum depression: Persistent sadness, loss of interest, guilt, hopelessness, or difficulty experiencing pleasure after childbirth.

  • Perinatal anxiety: Excessive worry, intrusive thoughts, heightened fears about a baby's safety, or difficulty relaxing during pregnancy or postpartum.

  • Adjustment to parenthood: Feeling overwhelmed by new responsibilities, changes in identity, or the demands of caring for an infant.

  • Relationship changes: Navigating changes in intimacy, communication, responsibilities, and connection with a partner.

  • Difficult birth experiences: Processing a frightening, unexpected, or emotionally distressing childbirth experience.

  • Pregnancy-related emotional challenges: Coping with uncertainty, physical changes, difficult decisions, or concerns about pregnancy and delivery.

These difficulties are not signs of personal weakness or inadequate parenting. They are experiences that deserve understanding, appropriate assessment, and effective care.

A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach

At Waypoint, perinatal counseling begins with understanding your particular circumstances, concerns, and goals.

Therapy offers a confidential, nonjudgmental setting in which you can explore difficult emotions, make sense of changes in your life, and develop practical ways to manage distress.

Depending on your needs, counseling may focus on reducing anxiety or depressive symptoms, strengthening coping skills, processing difficult experiences, improving communication, or developing greater confidence in your changing role and relationships.

Our approach is compassionate, collaborative, and informed by contemporary psychological research. We respect your individual values, beliefs, family circumstances, and decisions about parenthood.
